Office running for

SHERIFF

Q&A

What is your background and campaign platform?
33 years total law enforcement; 3 years Deputy Constable; 30 years in Hays & Caldwell Sheriff's Offices; 20 years Caldwell County Sheriff. Twelve county regional task force director for 10 years. Served as President of Sheriff's Association of Texas & T.C.A.L.E.A. Currently holds Master Corrections & Peace Officer Licenses. T.C.O.L.E. licensed Instructor. Platform: 1. Meet staffing issues with recruiting & retention efforts; 2. Bring inmates back home; 3. Introduce recidivism reduction programs.
What is the appropriate level of police staffing and how much oversight should the Sheriff exercise?
Current formulas show 2.1 deputies per thousand of population, and the last recorded census showed 267+ thousand citizens in Hays County. We are definitely below that number once computed. We could use a few more officers in the Dripping Springs and Wimberley areas of Hays County. As far as oversight I believe due to the responsibility being Soley on the Sheriff of the County then it's very important that the Sheriff keep a continual keen oversight to every facet of the office under His Charge, and a transparent message of what's happening both internally and externally to the citizens of the county.
What would your low-level marijuana offense position be once elected?
When a Sheriff is elected prior to taking office there are certain formalities that must be completed, one being the sworn oath of office which is swearing to Faithfully execute duties of the office and will preserve, protect and defend, the constitution and laws of the United States and of the laws of the State of Texas, so help me God. That means we don’t get to decide what we will enforce or not enforce, because the citizens have already voted and decided what will be enforced. However, there are some avenues that can be done through pretrial diversions and the District Attorney’s Office of what is decided to prosecute or not prosecute. I am not opposed to any agreement made between local officials. That is, unless legislation is passed changing these laws.
Bexar County Sheriff’s Office has a Mental Health Unit. What is your opinion of having such a unit and would you be an active advocate to get such a unit in place for Hays Co?
Yes, mental health initiatives are a must and are much better dealt with outside of a jail setting.
What is your position on contracting with other counties or private prisons to outsource our inmates?
The Hays County Sheriff’s Office is understaffed and requires immediate attention. I would address the staffing issue by working on recruiting and retention efforts to get to full strength. This is solely to alleviate liabilities, and the extremely high cost of having outsourced inmates across the State of Texas.
What Democratic values will you apply to your work once elected?
I plan to further build and develop partnerships with all our communities within Hays County, and we will provide the highest level of public safety to all. Through effective leadership, accountability and teamwork, we will strive to improve the quality of life, always seeking new and better ways to serve. We will be committed to treating everyone with courtesy, respect, and fairness at all times. We will be committed to managing our resources in a careful and responsible manner. I believe the employees are our most important assets and will seek their input into matters that impact employee job satisfaction and effectiveness. We will actively recruit and hire the best people; we will recognize and reward good performance; we will train our people to reach their potential. We will maintain the highest levels of integrity and professionalism in all our actions. We value diversity in the workplace and community. The Hays County Sheriff’s Office will lead by example.
If elected, would you support the Hays County Democratic Party by your presence at events and, if possible, financially? If not, please explain why.
Yes, I will support whenever and however possible!
Will you and your campaign participate in the Hays County Democratic Party Coordinated Campaign effort in 2024?
Yes, as often as possible.
