David Peterson

Office running for

HAYS COUNTY CONSTABLE PCT 1

Q&A

What is your background and campaign platform?
My name is David Peterson. I have 36 years of law enforcement experience with over 2400 hours of continuing education and training and have various certifications. I was a Hays County Deputy for 19 years and 17 as Pct 1 Constable. My goal is to maintain an efficient Constable’s office that will continue to fulfill all of the duties assigned to it with professionalism and respect to the community it serves.
How has your educational background and experience prepared you for this position?
As I mentioned 36 years of experience with the Hays County Sheriff’s Office and serving as a Constable and over 2400 hours of continuous education and training in law My 19 yrs with the Hays County Sheriffs Office allowed me to work in various departments where I gained most of my knowledge and experience. I was able to transfer what I learned to the Constable's office when I was initially elected.enforcement. I feel that has well prepared me for the Constable position.
Do you think Hays County is meeting the Mental Health needs of its citizens and how does this impact the role of Constable?
Hays County is making improvements in striving to meet the Mental Health needs of the community. This problem is a lot bigger than people are aware of especially with a growing county. The County is making our citizens more aware of the importance in dealing with persons that have mental issues. I feel the creation of the County Mental Health Court which identifies individuals with these problems and then provides various alternatives rather than incarceration is very important. I feel the impact it might have on the Constable’s office is to be more vigilant in serving civil process and with the officers that bailiff our court system at the government center. Currently the Constable’s office is responsible for providing bailiffs for all courts and it also provides the security at the center. We may need to provide assistance in identifying people that may need mental health care services.
Along with the duties of a police/ peace officer, Constables have a historic duty to serve the public in other unique ways. What have you done, or would you do if elected, to make your office unique in serving the public?
What I have done and continue to do is to involve myself and my office staff in various community and school functions. We participate or help nonprofit organizations with some of their fund raisers. I like to coordinate luncheons for our school district employees in as many schools as I can. It is a way of giving to the community that we serve. This is something really important to me. I want the public to know that I am there for them.
What Democratic values will you apply to your work once elected?
I will ensure that my officers serve the community in the work we do with professionalism and respect. Being that Precinct 1 is one of diverse communities, we need to treat all of our people the same. We want them to know that we are there for them and that they can come to us.
" If elected, would you support the Hays County Democratic Party by your presence at events and, if possible, financially? If not, please explain why."
I have been supportive of the Hays County Democrats over many years and have attended various events. I will continue to be supportive and if possible financially. I have no problem with that.
Will you and your campaign participate in the Hays County Democratic Party Coordinated Campaign effort in 2024?
Yes, we will and look forward to working with the Democratic Party in their 2024 Campaign effort.
